With a conventional Board of community volunteers working in partnership with professional staff leadership, the focus of the responsibility of the Board should also be one of leadership. One definition of the leadership function of the Board is that of influencing the community, participation in giving and raising of contributed income, Board regeneration and fiduciary responsibility. If the responsibility of a Board is leadership, what are its duties? Most organizations find that the only practical way to meet its ultimate responsibility is to delegate that responsibility to a chief executive officer and his/her staff. However, there are five functions which the Board is bound to retain to itself alone. They are:
