This course is designed to give you an overview and introduction to screenwriting and creative writing skills, and is taught by our Director of Education, Alex Doherty.
Alex has an MFA in screenwriting, and has experience in most facets of film production. He began at Sony Pictures’ post production as an intern, and moved into the story development department for the Oscar-winning producer of Platoon. He was an assistant producer at LucasFilm’s video game division, and most recently a part of the writing team for AAA video game Lords of the Fallen. He has also been a mentor at Society of Young Inklings since 2018, teaching creative writing to middle and high school students.
We welcome all writers to get creative before other obligations take over your day. This course meets every Wednesday in September, 2025 at 7:30am for 1 hour:
- September 3, Screenwriting Basics – Purpose, Style, Formatting, Software
- September 10, Story Arc & Character – How to plan a story that resonates with audiences
- September 17, Scene Breakdowns & Genre Conventions – Defining the big picture and a unique take
- September 24, Table Reading & Feedback Strategies – We’ll read through your scenes and practice constructive feedback techniques
The majority of writing scripts occurs outside of class, and can be done by hand, but our facilities are available if you want access to a computer.
